Back in the day the Mile High City was seen less as an urban escape and more of a… well we’ll admit it, a cow town. Today, though, things have changed and Denver has grown up. The city that hovers above sea level at an altitude of 5,280 feet has a lot to offer, but for those of you that are looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, we have compiled a list of Unique Things to do in Denver.
The Clyfford Still Museum
In Denver, and only Denver, you can view the largest collection of Clyfford Still works at the Clyfford Still Museum. The renowned 20th century abstract expressionist, stipulated in his will that his estate be given to a single city that would be willing to establish a permanent museum. In 2004 Denver was lucky enough to be chosen by Still’s wife as the permanent city and today you can view over 2,000 pieces of work by the late artist, nearly 95% of the works ever created by the artist.
An unofficial bookshop tour can take you around the best parts of Denver from LoDo to South Broadway. The famed Tattered Cover has several established locations throughout Denver and hosts a series of author lectures and book signings with writers like Neil Gaiman and Amy Tan. Some of our favorite bookstores include Tattered Cover located just a block away from Larimer Square, Bookies located just off of Colorado Blvd. and of course Fahrenheit Books on South Broadway.
To wind down after your afternoon of exploring the city we suggest taking a seat at a Mile High Winery and sampling some of their finest wines. A wine tasting is a fun way to get out on the town while avoiding the crowds at bars and restaurants. Enjoy an intimate setting while tasting some of Colorado’s best wines.
At Wishlist we like to embrace our creative sides. If you read one of our latest posts on How To Beat the February Blues, we recommended finding a hobby like painting. Well taking our own advice, we had our very fist painting lesson at Sipping N’ Painting and enjoyed the accoutrements of wine and snacks all while exploring our painting skills. Spend the afternoon with friends or family, learning to paint and relaxing with a glass of wine or a local brew.
Bonnie Brae Ice Cream
This corner ice cream shop is hard to beat and has garnered attention from locals and celebrities alike. If you’ve got a hankering for homemade, slow churned, real deal ice cream there is no place better than Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. The line is always out the door, despite the weather, and during the summer months the corner shop often plays host to local musicians. Ice cream might not be unique, but Bonnie Brae certainly is, which is why we had to include it on our list of Unique Things to do in Denver.
